The Canada Summer Games are being held around various venues in St. John’s Newfoundland and Labrador this August and athletes and coaches from all provinces and territories are represented in various sports. In one of the sports, kayaking, an arts and culture sideshow was held to highlight the tradition of sealksin kayak making. A framed birch bark kayak was put on display and these talented kayak builders like Ross Flowers explained to onlookers how the kayaks were made with sealskin and the importance these traditions are to the heritage and cultural fabric of Canada’s northern communities.
