Quebec to study possible seal hunt on nature reserve near Magdalen Islands

Canadian biologists have voiced concerns about the growing grey seal population on Brion Island in Gulf of St. Lawrence. As a result the Quebec government is looking into conducting a study about the effectiveness of reintroducing the seal hunt on a nature reserve on Brion Island near the Magdalen Islands.

Isabelle Melançon, Quebec’s Environment Minister said on Thursday that Quebec’s environmental review board (BAPE) will begin consultations this September, to determine if grey seals should be hunted on the beaches of Brion Island.

“There needs to be a social consensus, and that will be the purpose of these public hearings,” Melançon said.
