February 20, 2014 – Sydney Nova Scotia, — Staff – The Cape Breton Post. – The Department of Fisheries and Oceans has approved a grey seal hunt in the southernmost area of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, which includes the waters off western Cape Breton.
The conservation harvesting plan accepted by DFO has permitted sealing since Tuesday in Areas 21 to 26, which also include the entire Northumberland Strait up to and including the Bay of Chaleur in northern New Brunswick.
DFO spokeswoman Krista Petersen said the department has received a “hail out” message from sealers indicating their intention to harvest this year.
