As much as we are happy for the indigenous hunters of Nunavut in this recent decision to qualify for an exemption to the European Union’s ban on seal imports, we here at the CSA are unhappy to read that the EU Union has neglected to recognize many Canadian sealers’ important way of life, culture, history and economic need to make a living from this sustainable resource conducted in a humane manner under strict federal guidelines with approval and oversight from recognized veterinary experts.

“This is an important step towards the recognition of sealing as a way of life for Inuit,” said Nunavut Environment Minister Johnny Mike in a release. “We must ensure that communities benefit in a tangible way from this positive development by continuing to promote the recovery of international seal markets”.
